AI Slop, Scientific Thinking, and the Road to the Final Library


A growing number of people are worried that artificial intelligence will flood academia with slop, weaken peer review, and degrade the quality of scientific thought. I think this fear is overstated. In my experience, AI is not making serious thinkers lazier or less rigorous. It is making them faster, broader, and more capable. It is expanding the search space of human inquiry. Used carefully, it does not replace scientific thinking. It amplifies it.



The key issue is not whether AI can produce bad output. Of course it can. So can humans. The real question is how it is used by people whose reputations are on the line. Scientists are not going to blindly submit AI-generated work and hope no one notices. Their name is attached to what they publish. Their peers will scrutinize their reasoning, their sources, and their claims. That creates a strong filter. AI does not remove the need for verification. It increases the speed and breadth of exploration. The responsibility for accuracy remains exactly where it has always been, with the human researcher.


In practice, AI is far more than a writing tool. Its deeper value is in research. It casts a much wider net than I can on my own. It surfaces connections across literatures, disciplines, and concepts that I would not have known to look for. It can tell me whether an idea has been explored, whether it is worth pursuing, and whether it is directionally sound. It brings in relevant context, objections, and supporting evidence. It helps me connect dots I did not even know existed. In doing so, it is not just helping me write. It is actively teaching me.


There are real risks. AI can hallucinate. I have seen that myself, particularly more often in earlier versions. That means everything still needs to be checked. Claims need to be verified. Citations need to be confirmed. But this is not a fatal flaw. It is a constraint on use. Every powerful intellectual tool introduces new failure modes. The appropriate response is not rejection. It is discipline. The core norms of science, skepticism, verification, and accountability, remain intact.


Another concern is that AI tends to agree too readily. That is partly true. It often aligns with the framing you give it. But it also pushes back. It can identify weak assumptions, surface counterarguments, and point out logical gaps. When used properly, it becomes something unusual: a system that can function as both collaborator and critic. Combined with its speed and availability, this makes it a uniquely powerful intellectual partner. It can sustain focused, high-level conversation indefinitely, something that is difficult to replicate even in strong academic environments. If you are a researcher, you must remember to ask it to push back.


This is why I do not see AI as a source of widespread academic degradation. I see it as a massive increase in cognitive bandwidth. Science is not just about correctness. It is about search. It is about exploring possibilities, testing ideas, and connecting insights across domains. AI dramatically improves that process. It increases the number of ideas that can be considered, the speed at which they can be evaluated, and the range of connections that can be explored. Even if it introduces some noise, the overall effect is to accelerate discovery.


A closely related shift is already underway in programming, where developers are beginning to treat AI not as a tool they actively operate, but as an asynchronous collaborator. They define a task, set constraints, approve a plan, and then let the system work independently for hours at a time, often overnight. By morning, the agent has explored the codebase, tested approaches, written and revised solutions, and returned a structured result for review. This “work while you sleep” model is still evolving, but the underlying pattern is clear: human effort is shifting from continuous execution to problem framing, oversight, and evaluation, while the machine handles large portions of the search and iteration.


There is no reason to think this pattern will remain confined to software engineering. The same dynamic is likely to extend into scientific research. A researcher will outline a hypothesis, define relevant constraints, datasets, and literatures, and then allow an AI system to spend hours or days exploring the space around that idea. By the time the researcher returns, the system may have surfaced supporting and contradictory evidence, mapped adjacent theories, identified gaps, proposed experimental designs, and even generated candidate interpretations. The human role does not disappear. It becomes more strategic. The researcher becomes a director of inquiry rather than a bottleneck within it. This is not the automation of science in the sense of replacing scientists. It is the expansion of scientific cognition, where each researcher can effectively deploy a persistent, high-bandwidth investigative process that continues working even in their absence.



This trajectory points toward something larger. It points toward what I have called the Final Library. By this I do not mean a literal building or a single finished archive. I mean a new kind of knowledge environment. The Final Library is a continuously updated, AI-mediated repository that contains not only the full recorded output of human thought, but also the synthetic expansions of that thought generated by machine systems. It does not simply store information. It organizes it, cross-references it, tests it, refines it, and maps the relationships between ideas. In this environment, knowledge is not just retrieved. It is actively explored. A user can move from high-level summaries to fine-grained detail, from one field to another, from established results to open questions, all within a unified system. The library identifies connections, highlights contradictions, surfaces gaps, and suggests new directions. It represents not just what humans have discovered, but much of what humans could have discovered within the limits of our cognitive reach. It is, in effect, a mapping of human-accessible idea space.


There may not be only one such library. Different institutions, companies, and societies may build their own versions, with different biases, access rules, and priorities. But the general trajectory is clear. We are moving toward a world in which large portions of knowledge are mediated through systems that can search, synthesize, and extend ideas far beyond individual human capacity. This does not eliminate human thinking. It changes its role. Humans become more like navigators, evaluators, and integrators within a vastly expanded conceptual landscape.


From this perspective, the fear of AI slop looks misplaced. Yes, there will be mistakes. Yes, there will be low-quality uses of the technology. But those are transitional effects. The deeper shift is that AI is dramatically increasing our ability to explore and organize knowledge. It is making it easier to test ideas, connect domainst, and build arguments. It is not collapsing science. It is scaling it.


The real challenge is not to keep AI out of scholarship. It is to use it well. To verify carefully. To remain intellectually responsible. To take advantage of the expanded search capacity without becoming complacent. If those conditions are met, then AI will not degrade scientific inquiry. It will accelerate it. And in doing so, it will help build the kind of knowledge system that previous generations could only approximate, a living, evolving, machine-assisted library of human and post-human thought.
