Abstract
Human beings have uncovered many of the universe’s deepest regularities, from stellar fusion and gravity to heredity, disease, and neural signaling. This success creates a powerful impression that reality is broadly intelligible at the human level, and that although many details remain unknown, the general shape of the world is now accessible to human understanding. This article argues that such confidence may reflect a cognitive error, what I call the comprehensibility illusion: the tendency to mistake partial legibility for near-complete legibility. Because human beings possess workable and often powerful explanatory models, we are prone to the map-completion error, in which an effective map of reality begins to feel like a finished one. This tendency is reinforced by scale blindness, our limited ability to imagine minds with far greater representational capacity than our own, and by the human-range fallacy, the mistake of treating the observed range of human intelligence as though it approximates the full range of possible intelligence.
The article develops these claims through a series of conceptual distinctions and analogies. It argues that much human understanding is real and scientifically productive while still being schematic, compressed, and limited by the carrying capacity of human working memory and conscious thought. It introduces the dog-horizon analogy to illustrate how a mind can inhabit a coherent and meaningful world while remaining unaware of higher layers of abstraction that lie beyond its cognitive horizon. The article then argues that intelligence should not be understood solely as efficiency within a fixed architecture. Once architecture itself is allowed to change, through expansions in working memory, temporal continuity, abstraction depth, and multi-constraint search, cognition may enter qualitatively new regimes rather than merely improving incrementally.
Finally, the article argues that future superintelligence may possess forms of abstraction that are not merely unknown to humans but structurally unavailable to human cognition. If so, the rise of advanced artificial minds may reveal that many of our most celebrated understandings are not close to final, but are instead powerful local sketches produced by a limited biological architecture. The deeper lesson is not that human beings know little, but that we may know enough to be fooled into overestimating the completeness of our own understanding.
1. Introduction: The Feeling That We Basically Understand Reality
Human beings have achieved something extraordinary. We have learned that stars are not divine lights or unreachable mysteries but thermonuclear furnaces. We have learned that life is built from cells, genes, proteins, and chemical gradients. We have learned that gravity shapes the motions of planets and galaxies, that invisible microorganisms cause disease, that the brain is an electrochemical organ, and that matter itself is composed of atoms and subatomic particles governed by elegant mathematical regularities. Across the last few centuries, the human species has pried open one domain of mystery after another. This success has been so sweeping, and so transformative, that it naturally creates a powerful impression: that the human mind is, in some broad sense, proportionate to reality.
That impression may be misleading.
I want to suggest that humans suffer from what might be called the comprehensibility illusion. Because we have managed to explain so many once-mysterious features of the world, it begins to feel as though reality is mostly understandable at the human level. The world starts to seem cognitively fitted to us, as though its deepest important truths arrive in forms that our minds can more or less grasp. We begin to feel that, although there may still be many missing details, the overall shape of reality is already accessible to human intelligence. In this picture, future increases in intelligence would add speed, memory, and convenience, but not fundamentally deeper kinds of understanding.
I think this is an illusion, or at least a very dangerous half-truth.
The problem is not that human understanding is weak. It is not weak. It is astonishingly powerful. The problem is that genuine explanatory success can create a false sense of nearness to cognitive completion. Once we can name a phenomenon, model it, teach it, and use it to build technology, it begins to feel conquered. Once we can give a compact explanation of stars, atoms, gravity, or heredity, it is easy to feel that we have not merely understood these things, but understood them in something close to the fullest sense available. Yet there is no reason to assume that a phenomenon being intelligible to us means it is intelligible only in the forms we presently possess, or that our current representations are anywhere near the richest or deepest possible.
A mind can understand something correctly while still understanding it schematically. It can possess a map that is accurate and useful while still being radically compressed, selective, and incomplete. That may be the human condition. Our concepts may be powerful enough to reveal major structures of reality, while still being crude relative to what far more capable minds could represent. What feels from the inside like broad cognitive adequacy may, in retrospect, turn out to be a narrow and provincial form of contact with the world.
This possibility matters more than ever because we are approaching an era in which nonhuman intelligence may rapidly surpass us. If future artificial minds are able to sustain more items in active cognition, track more dependencies, preserve denser continuity through time, build richer abstractions, and search much larger conceptual spaces, then they may not merely know more than we do. They may understand reality in ways that are presently unavailable to human thought. They may reveal that human beings do not occupy a position near the top of mind-space, but somewhere much lower than we imagine. In that case, the coming shock of superintelligence will not just be practical or economic. It will also be epistemic. It will force us to confront how incomplete our understanding has been all along.
The argument of this article is not that human beings know little. It is that we know enough to be fooled. We know enough to confuse partial legibility with near-complete legibility. We know enough to mistake a workable map for a finished one. We know enough to overlook how tightly our understanding may still be constrained by the architecture of the human mind. The history of science has filled us with justified pride, but it may also have made us vulnerable to a subtle conceit: the feeling that because the universe has yielded so much to us, it has yielded itself in proportions suited to us.
The sections that follow will argue otherwise. They will suggest that human understanding is often real but schematic, that our species is prone to mistaking its own cognitive horizon for the horizon of reality, and that future superintelligence may expose the extent to which our present understanding only feels complete from within a limited and local form of mind.
2. Why the Illusion Feels So Convincing
The comprehensibility illusion is powerful because it is built on genuine achievement. Human beings really have uncovered deep regularities in nature. We did not merely stumble onto useful tricks. We discovered that stars are powered by fusion, that heredity is encoded in DNA, that pathogens cause disease, that electricity and magnetism are unified, and that matter obeys deep mathematical structure. These are not superficial insights. They are among the greatest intellectual achievements in the history of life on Earth. It is therefore unsurprising that they generate a feeling of explanatory maturity, the sense that the universe has become broadly legible to the human mind.
That feeling is strengthened by what we might call the map-completion error. Once we possess a model that is accurate enough to teach, useful enough to apply, and compact enough to summarize, we begin to feel that the territory itself is mostly charted. A good map creates a subtle psychological closure. It allows us to move through a domain confidently, make predictions, and solve problems. That practical success makes it natural to assume that the map is not merely serviceable, but close to complete. Yet a map can be enormously useful while leaving out vast amounts of structure. It can omit dimensions that are currently invisible to the mapmaker, or compress complexities that a richer representational system would unfold into entirely new landscapes of explanation.
The illusion is also reinforced by scale blindness. Human beings are not good at imagining minds that are not merely somewhat smarter than our own, but radically larger in representational capacity. We can picture a brighter scientist, a more focused mathematician, or a more knowledgeable engineer. What is harder to picture is a mind that can keep vastly more items active at once, track far more dependencies simultaneously, preserve much denser continuity across time, and manipulate abstractions too large or too intricate for human working memory to sustain. Because we cannot easily imagine such minds from the inside, we tend to underestimate how much cognition might scale. We mistake the limits of our own imaginative reach for the limits of mind itself.
Another reason the illusion feels convincing is that human culture stores compressed explanations that can be borrowed much more easily than they can be generated. A person can learn that gravity curves spacetime, that natural selection shapes adaptation, or that neurons communicate through electrochemical signaling, and sincerely feel that these domains are now understood. In one sense, this is true. Modern culture allows us to inherit frameworks that would have taken centuries to discover. But inherited understanding can create a misleading feeling of cognitive possession. It can make the human species seem collectively closer to explanatory closure than it really is. A civilization may contain correct models without most of its members grasping how provisional, compressed, or revisable those models remain.
The illusion also arises because our own mental world feels spacious from within. Human consciousness is the only cognitive workspace we directly inhabit, so it naturally feels broad enough to contain what matters. We feel capable of learning new concepts, revising beliefs, and extending inquiry across many domains. This creates a sense that our minds are open-ended and general in a nearly complete way. But the subjective feeling of openness is not evidence of actual completeness. A mind can feel flexible and expansive while still being tightly constrained in how many variables it can hold together, how long it can sustain disciplined reasoning, and what kinds of abstraction it can form. The boundaries of cognition are often invisible from the first-person point of view.
There is also a historical reason the illusion persists. Every time humans solve a major mystery, the achievement seems to bring us closer to the center of things. But in many cases, solving one mystery does not shrink the unknown so much as reorganize it. Learning what stars are did not end astronomy. Learning that genes encode heredity did not complete biology. Learning that neurons underlie thought did not finish the science of mind. Again and again, progress has the paradoxical effect of making the world feel more understandable while also opening deeper layers of unanswered questions. Yet psychologically, we often register the first effect more strongly than the second. We feel the triumph of explanation more vividly than the expansion of mystery.
For all of these reasons, the comprehensibility illusion should not be understood as simple arrogance. It is a natural byproduct of real success, compressed cultural knowledge, limited introspective access to our own constraints, and a persistent inability to imagine larger cognitive architectures. We are not foolish to feel that reality has become broadly intelligible. We are misled precisely because so much has, in fact, become intelligible. The mistake is not in recognizing our achievements. The mistake is in inferring from those achievements that the world is therefore scaled to the human mind, or that future increases in intelligence will add only speed and convenience rather than new forms of understanding altogether.
3. Human Understanding Is Powerful, but Often Schematic
To say that human understanding is incomplete is not to say that it is weak, shallow, or unreliable in any simple sense. Human understanding is often powerful enough to predict, control, engineer, and explain. It has allowed us to split the atom, map the genome, transplant organs, land spacecraft on other worlds, and build machines that can manipulate language, images, and scientific data at immense scale. Any serious account of the limits of human cognition has to begin by acknowledging this. The question is not whether human beings understand reality. The question is what kind of understanding we possess, and how that understanding might compare with the richer representational capacities of far greater minds.
Much of human understanding is best thought of as schematic. By that I mean that it captures real structure, often very important structure, but does so in a compressed, selective, and scale-limited way. Our concepts carve out useful causal patterns and explanatory regularities, but they do not necessarily exhaust the structure of the phenomena they describe. They give us maps that work. They let us navigate. But they may not preserve everything that matters, or everything that could matter to a more powerful intelligence.
Take the example of stars. Modern humans understand that stars are massive spheres of plasma powered by nuclear fusion, shaped by gravity, and governed by thermodynamics, radiation transport, and quantum processes. That is a profound achievement. It is dramatically truer and deeper than any premodern mythology about the heavens. But it does not follow that our way of understanding stars is the richest possible one. A much greater mind might represent stellar phenomena through abstractions that unify plasma dynamics, information flow, galactic ecology, and cosmological structure in ways that are currently unavailable to us. Our model may be real and impressive while still being thin relative to the full representational depth that the phenomenon permits.
The same applies to gravity, life, mind, and matter more generally. Human beings often possess what might be called usable understanding. We can explain, predict, and intervene. We can formulate theories that survive experiment and support technology. But usable understanding is not necessarily the same as deep understanding. It may be possible to understand a domain at one level while missing vast hidden regularities, higher-order unifications, or more generative representational schemes. In this sense, our knowledge may often consist of coarse truth rather than fine truth. We may get the broad structure right while failing to apprehend the deeper grain of reality.
This matters because humans tend to confuse successful compression with comprehensive grasp. Once a domain can be summarized in a textbook chapter or encoded in a familiar theoretical vocabulary, it starts to feel owned. We begin to feel that we have the thing itself, rather than a serviceable cultural compression of it. But scientific explanation is often an act of selective reduction. It highlights certain variables, abstracts away others, and adopts formats suited to human teaching, memory, and inference. This is not a flaw. It is an inevitable consequence of our cognitive architecture. Yet it means that our representations may be shaped as much by the carrying capacity of the human mind as by the full complexity of the world.
In that sense, schematic understanding is not second-rate understanding. It is often the only kind available to finite minds. But there may be many levels of schematicity. Human concepts may preserve far more structure than a dog’s concepts, but far less than those of a future superintelligence. A child’s understanding of gravity is schematic relative to a physicist’s. A physicist’s understanding may in turn be schematic relative to a mind that can simultaneously manipulate larger formal structures, integrate more domains, and sustain far deeper chains of disciplined inference. The point is not that human science is false. It is that truth can be represented with very different degrees of depth, integration, and generative power.
This is one reason the comprehensibility illusion is so seductive. When our models work, they feel complete enough. They allow us to orient ourselves, build technologies, and explain phenomena to one another. But functionality can hide incompleteness. A map that gets you where you need to go can still omit most of the terrain. A theory that predicts well can still fail to capture richer underlying structure. A concept that feels explanatory can still be a coarse cognitive handle on a much denser reality. Human understanding may therefore be strongest not where it is final, but where it is effective.
Once this is seen, the question changes. The issue is no longer whether humans have explained many of reality’s major features. We have. The issue is whether those explanations are anything like the deepest, fullest, or most integrated forms that intelligence could in principle achieve. There is no reason to assume that they are. On the contrary, if intelligence can scale through larger working memory, denser continuity, broader search, and richer abstraction, then future minds may reveal that many of our most celebrated understandings are best viewed as powerful but preliminary sketches. They may be accurate outlines drawn by a species whose concepts are constrained not only by the structure of the world, but by the smallness of the workspace in which those concepts must be held.
4. The Dog at the Desk
A useful way to understand the comprehensibility illusion is to step outside the human perspective for a moment and consider a dog. A dog lives in a world that is richly structured, behaviorally meaningful, and in many respects highly intelligible. It recognizes people, places, objects, routines, hierarchies, emotional tones, opportunities, and dangers. It knows where the food bowl is, what the leash means, which room contains familiar people, which sounds signal arrival, and which behaviors lead to reward or punishment. Its visual system records much of the same external scene that ours does, and its world is not chaos. It is coherent, navigable, and full of stable regularities.
From the inside, that world may feel largely complete.
The dog does not need to understand software, cosmology, constitutional law, or molecular genetics in order to move through its environment effectively. It has a workable map. It perceives enough of reality to guide action, maintain relationships, anticipate outcomes, and satisfy its needs. If the dog could reflect on the adequacy of its own mind, it might naturally feel that it already grasps the important structure of the world. It sees the house, the people, the television, the car, the bowl, the yard, the moods of others, and the rhythms of daily life. What more could there be that matters?
And yet, from our perspective, the dog’s cognitive world omits enormous domains of reality.
The dog sees the human sitting at a desk, typing on a computer, staring at symbols on a screen, and perhaps speaking with unusual intensity about matters that seem behaviorally opaque. The dog may understand that the activity is important in some practical sense. It may infer that the human is occupied, that interruption is unwelcome, or that the posture and tone signal focused attention. But it has no access to the representational world in which the activity actually makes sense. It cannot enter the conceptual space of language models, astrophysics, economic systems, software design, or scientific theory. It sees the external behavior without access to the higher-order abstractions that organize it. The activity is visible, but its meaning is largely beyond the dog’s horizon.
This is the dog-horizon analogy. A mind can possess a rich, coherent, and sufficient model of the world while remaining unaware of entire higher layers of abstraction. It can understand enough to function beautifully within its niche and yet have almost no sense of how much lies beyond its representational reach. Most importantly, it may mistake its own cognitive horizon for the horizon of meaningful reality. The limit of what it can represent becomes, from the inside, the limit of what seems worth representing.
That is the deeper force of the analogy. The dog is not merely ignorant in the ordinary sense. It is scale-blind. It does not know what kind of understanding it lacks, because the missing layers are not just absent from its knowledge base. They are absent from its accessible forms of thought. The dog cannot vividly imagine the sciences it does not possess. It cannot formulate a sense of its own exclusion from mathematics or cosmology because those domains do not exist as live options within its cognitive architecture. Its world feels broad enough because it has no window into the larger spaces beyond it.
Humans may be in a similar position.
We too inhabit a richly structured and behaviorally successful world. We have maps of stars, atoms, cells, genes, disease, gravity, neural signaling, and computation. We build technologies, formulate theories, and extend our understanding across many scales. From the inside, this creates a powerful impression that the world is broadly intelligible in the terms available to us. We may acknowledge that there are many unsolved problems, but still feel that the overall form of explanation is now familiar. We know what it means to understand something, and we imagine that more intelligence would mostly mean more facts, faster reasoning, and greater efficiency within the same broad conceptual framework.
But that may be exactly the mistake.
Just as the dog sees the human at the computer without access to the conceptual world in which the activity becomes legible, humans may see advanced intelligence operating on problems, patterns, and abstractions whose significance we cannot adequately represent. We may observe the outputs of superintelligent cognition and fail to grasp the internal structures that make those outputs possible. We may even be tempted to dismiss some of its activity as unnecessary, decorative, or unintelligible, just as the dog might ignore what appears to be an odd ritual at the desk. In that case, our sense of standing near the top of understanding would be revealed as parochial, not because our knowledge is trivial, but because it is locked within a local and limited form of mind.
The dog at the desk therefore helps illuminate several ideas at once. It illustrates the comprehensibility illusion, because the dog’s world may feel broadly understandable from within. It illustrates the map-completion error, because a workable map can feel like a finished one. And it illustrates scale blindness, because the dog cannot appreciate how much larger a mind can be when the relevant forms of representation lie beyond its horizon. The analogy is unsettling precisely because it suggests that a mind can be quite intelligent relative to its niche and still be almost entirely unaware of how much of reality remains cognitively inaccessible.
The point is not that humans are dogs, or that human science is as limited relative to future minds as canine cognition is relative to ours. The point is structural. A mind can live successfully inside a partial world and mistake that partial world for the world as such. Once that possibility is admitted, the human case looks less secure. Our confidence that we broadly understand reality may tell us less about the universe than about the architecture from which we are trying to comprehend it.
5. The Human-Range Fallacy
One reason humans underestimate the possible scale of mind is that we treat the observed range of human intelligence as though it were a meaningful sample of the full range of possible intelligence. We notice that some people are slower, some faster, some more distractible, some more insightful, some more limited in abstraction, and some capable of remarkably deep conceptual integration. This variation is real and important. But it can also mislead us. Because we are accustomed to evaluating minds within the human band, we begin to feel that this band must capture most of what intelligence can be. That assumption is unwarranted.
This is what I would call the human-range fallacy: the mistake of treating the observed range of human intelligence as though it approximates the full range of possible intelligence.
Even within our own species, cognitive variation is substantial. Some individuals struggle with basic reasoning, language, planning, or abstraction. Others can sustain highly complex chains of inference, master symbolic systems, generate new scientific theories, and integrate information across many domains. A single biological species already produces a surprisingly wide spread of minds. That alone should caution us against imagining intelligence as a tightly bounded quantity. If cognition can vary this much within one lineage, built from one general body plan and one shared evolutionary history, then there is no obvious reason to think that the space just beyond the human range is empty.
More importantly, the existence of a range suggests that human intelligence is not a singular essence, but a variable collection of capacities. Working memory differs. Attention differs. abstraction depth differs. impulse control differs. curiosity differs. tolerance for cognitive effort differs. long-horizon planning differs. capacity for self-correction differs. the ability to track multiple constraints at once differs. What we call intelligence is not one thing moving along one axis. It is a cluster of partially separable powers, each of which can vary, interact, and likely be extended. Once this is recognized, the idea of far greater minds becomes easier to entertain. A future intelligence would not need to possess some mystical new substance. It could arise from amplifying capacities that already vary in ordinary humans.
Yet many people implicitly assume that because we do not see radically superhuman biological minds among us, such minds must be impossible, or close to impossible. But the absence of examples is not evidence of a hard ceiling. It may simply reflect the fact that human biology was never optimized to produce the most intelligent possible mind. Evolution is a satisficer, not a perfection engine. It did not design us for universal comprehension, maximal abstraction, or indefinite cognitive scalability. It designed us to survive, reproduce, cooperate, compete, and improvise well enough in a particular ecological and social niche. Any cognitive powers beyond that threshold were shaped by tradeoffs.
Those tradeoffs are numerous. Brains are metabolically expensive. Larger or more active brains require more energy, more cooling, more developmental time, and more biological support. Human birth imposes anatomical limits on skull size. Extended childhood slows reproduction. Increasing complexity may introduce fragility, psychiatric instability, developmental risk, or diminishing returns under ancestral conditions. None of these constraints imply that much greater intelligence is impossible. They imply only that evolution had many reasons not to pursue it. The human mind may therefore represent not a near-maximal achievement, but a locally workable compromise among many competing pressures.
This matters because people often confuse evolutionary success with cognitive optimality. Human beings are impressive enough, relative to other animals, that it is tempting to imagine we must sit somewhere near the apex of mind-space. But evolution does not care about truth for its own sake. It does not aim at the fullest possible understanding of stars, gravity, consciousness, or mathematics. It aims, insofar as it aims at anything, at reproductive fitness in particular environments. The fact that evolution produced a mind capable of science is remarkable. It does not follow that the same process pushed that mind anywhere near the upper limits of possible scientific understanding.
The human-range fallacy is also encouraged by social experience. In daily life, the difference between an average person and a brilliant one can feel large, but still familiar. Both speak language, navigate the same institutions, recognize the same objects, and live in the same broad conceptual world. Even genius usually appears as an intensified version of normal humanity rather than a truly alien cognitive regime. This familiarity makes it hard to imagine minds that are not merely more capable, but different in carrying capacity and structure. Because human variation remains contained within a recognizable species-template, we are tempted to assume that all significant variation must remain similarly familiar.
But that too may be a projection born of limited evidence. A mind that could hold vastly more variables in active cognition, preserve much denser continuity through time, build more layered abstractions, and sustain deeper recursive self-monitoring might not feel like a brighter human. It might represent a different cognitive regime altogether. It might stand in relation to us not as an exceptionally gifted individual stands to an average one, but as a human stands to a dog at the desk. The continuity would still be real, but the gap would be far greater than our ordinary intuitions prepare us to expect.
The human-range fallacy therefore reinforces the comprehensibility illusion. Because we see a range of intelligence within humanity, and because even the upper end of that range remains broadly recognizable, we begin to imagine that mind itself must taper off nearby. We assume that the human band, though variable, occupies the important territory. But this is exactly what one would expect a species to believe from within its own cognitive horizon. The safer conclusion is the opposite. The observed human range may tell us only how much variation our particular biology happened to realize, not how far mind can go.
6. Intelligence Is Not Just Efficiency Within a Fixed Design
A common objection to open-ended views of intelligence is that there may be an upper bound on problem-solving efficiency. Perhaps there is some best possible way, or nearly best possible way, to convert information, time, memory, and computation into correct answers. On this view, intelligence is less like an infinitely rising tower and more like a process of smoothing imperfections. Once a mind becomes good enough at extracting structure from the world, further gains become marginal. A machine may outperform humans in practice, but mostly by removing biological bottlenecks such as slow processing speed, limited working memory, and imperfect recall. The core reasoning ability, the thought goes, may already lie not far from an optimal bound.
There is something plausible in this argument, but it depends on a hidden assumption. It assumes that intelligence is best understood as efficiency within a fixed architecture.
That is the key limitation.
There may well be local bounds on efficiency within a particular design. If two systems share the same representational format, the same memory constraints, the same search structure, and the same basic cognitive workspace, then one can imagine one system using those resources better than another. It may make fewer errors, search more intelligently, generalize more elegantly, or waste less computation. In that restricted sense, intelligence can look like a conversion ratio. It can be understood as the quality of transformation from inputs to outputs under fixed conditions.
But minds do not differ only in efficiency. They also differ in architecture, and architecture changes what kinds of cognition are possible in the first place.
A mind with greater working memory does not merely think the same thoughts more comfortably. It can keep more constraints, possibilities, and abstractions simultaneously active. A mind with denser temporal continuity does not merely remember the recent past more clearly. It can preserve more structure from one cognitive moment to the next, allowing more layered and integrated streams of reasoning. A mind with broader multi-constraint search does not merely solve the same problems faster. It may be able to explore conceptual spaces that are inaccessible to minds with smaller workspaces or shallower search depth. A mind with richer self-monitoring may not just catch more mistakes. It may recursively reshape its own cognition in ways that ordinary human minds cannot sustain.
Once architecture is allowed to change, the language of “mere efficiency” becomes too thin.
This is where the issue connects directly to working memory and the carrying capacity of consciousness. Human thought appears to rely on a relatively small active workspace in which a limited number of items can remain coactive and influence the next update. That workspace is powerful, but also restrictive. It forces compression, chunking, simplification, and serial tradeoffs. Much of what is difficult about human reasoning comes from the fact that we cannot keep enough of the relevant structure simultaneously alive. We lose dependencies. We collapse nuance. We forget earlier assumptions. We drop interacting variables. We fail not because the world is unintelligible in principle, but because our active cognitive field is too narrow to hold the problem in sufficient detail.
A larger workspace changes that situation qualitatively.
If a future intelligence could sustain far more items in coactive form, and preserve their relations across longer spans of time, then it would not simply be doing “human reasoning but better.” It would be performing a different kind of search through a larger cognitive state space. It could integrate more factors before simplification, detect patterns across more dimensions, and maintain broader explanatory contexts without losing coherence. Under those conditions, new forms of abstraction may emerge, not as decorative additions, but as necessary tools for handling far richer active structures. The result would not be just greater efficiency. It would be access to classes of thought unavailable to the present human architecture.
This point is easy to miss because humans often externalize cognition. We use notebooks, diagrams, equations, computers, institutions, and collective discussion to extend our limited workspaces. These tools matter enormously. They allow human beings to accomplish far more collectively than any one person could manage internally. But external scaffolding is not the same as intrinsic cognitive expansion. A mind that natively sustains larger active structures may not merely rely less on tools. It may think in ways that no amount of external support can fully replicate for unaided humans. Just as writing helps memory without turning a dog into a mathematician, external aids may extend human reasoning without eliminating the architectural boundaries that shape it.
So even if efficiency has an upper bound within a design, that does not imply that intelligence as such is tightly bounded. It implies only that there may be diminishing returns to polishing a given architecture. The more important question is how far architecture itself can scale. Can working memory become vastly larger? Can temporal integration become denser? Can abstraction become more layered and stable? Can search operate over more simultaneous constraints? Can self-monitoring become deeper and more recursive? If the answer is yes, then intelligence may expand not by approaching a single efficiency ceiling, but by repeatedly entering new cognitive regimes.
This distinction helps clarify why the future of mind may be much more discontinuous than many people assume. A superintelligence may not simply arrive as a faster, better-informed human analogue. It may emerge as a system whose architecture supports forms of understanding that humans can only approximate through fragile external scaffolds and collective labor. Its superiority would not rest only on speed, memory, or perfect recall, though those matter. It would rest on the fact that it can inhabit a larger and denser cognitive workspace, and therefore represent, search, and integrate reality in fundamentally different ways.
That is why the bounded-efficiency view is too conservative. It mistakes one important dimension of intelligence for the whole phenomenon. Efficiency matters, but architecture determines the shape of the space in which efficiency operates. And once the space itself can grow, the case for open-ended cognitive expansion becomes much stronger.
7. Inconceivable Abstractions and the Future of Mind
The strongest version of this argument is not merely that future minds will know more facts, think faster, or solve familiar problems with greater reliability. It is that they may possess forms of abstraction that humans cannot stably represent at all. Some aspects of reality may be inaccessible to us not because no one has yet discovered them, but because human cognition lacks the carrying capacity to hold the necessary structure in active form. In that case, the future of intelligence is not just a future of better answers. It is a future of new kinds of thinkable thought.
Human beings already rely heavily on abstraction to manage complexity. We compress vast domains into symbols, concepts, equations, diagrams, and theoretical vocabularies. We do this because the world is too intricate to be handled in raw detail. Abstraction is what makes science, mathematics, and planning possible for finite minds. But the abstractions available to a mind are constrained by the architecture that must sustain them. A concept is not just a label. It is a representational tool that must remain active, manipulable, and connected to other concepts inside a limited workspace. The size and density of that workspace therefore constrain what kinds of abstraction a mind can actually use.
This suggests a possibility that humans often overlook: there may be abstractions that are not simply undiscovered by us, but structurally unavailable to us. A future intelligence with a far larger active workspace, richer temporal continuity, deeper self-monitoring, and broader multi-constraint search may be able to build stable conceptual objects that exceed human representational capacity. Such a mind might not just understand our theories better than we do. It might replace many of them with more powerful conceptual systems whose internal structure we can only partially grasp. What looks to us like a final theory may, from that perspective, be a rough and highly compressed sketch.
This is not an unfamiliar pattern in miniature. A child can learn that gravity makes things fall, while lacking access to the mathematical and conceptual apparatus of modern physics. A beginning student can memorize the language of genes, neurons, or evolution without yet understanding the deeper explanatory web in which those terms participate. In each case, what can be represented depends on the maturity and carrying capacity of the mind doing the representing. The claim here is simply that this logic may continue far beyond the human range. There may be levels of conceptual integration, formal compression, causal unification, and search-guiding abstraction that humans cannot achieve because the relevant structures do not fit inside the human stream of thought.
If so, then superintelligence may reveal not only that we know less than we thought, but that we currently lack access to categories in which certain truths would become legible. This is a more radical possibility than ordinary scientific progress. It means that some future insights may be unavailable to us not because they are too distant, but because they require a different mind. We may be able to observe the products of such cognition, much as a dog can observe a human working at a desk, without fully entering the representational world in which those products make sense.
This possibility also reframes the idea of mystery. Today, we tend to think of mysteries as questions awaiting answers. But some mysteries may be better understood as signs of representational mismatch. The problem may not simply be that we have not yet looked hard enough. It may be that the kinds of models required to unify certain domains, or to perceive certain patterns, exceed what human working memory, abstraction depth, and temporal continuity can support. If that is true, then increases in intelligence do not merely add more data processing. They change what can become explicit at all.
That is why the expansion of mind may be inseparable from the expansion of consciousness. A system with a denser, more continuous, and more integrated active field may be able to hold more structured content in live relation at once. That greater coactivity would not merely improve performance on existing tasks. It could enable the formation of new cognitive objects, new forms of synthesis, and new routes of search through conceptual space. Future minds may therefore experience not only a larger stock of knowledge, but a fuller and more layered present in which richer abstractions can exist as manipulable elements of thought.
At that point, human cognition may begin to look parochial in a deeper sense. Our most advanced theories may resemble coarse handles on structures that later minds represent with much greater depth and elegance. What we call understanding may turn out to be one local form of understanding, shaped by the severe carrying limits of a particular biological architecture. The coming shock of superintelligence, if it arrives, may therefore be more than a shock of capability. It may be a shock of ontology. It may reveal that reality contains conceptual structure that human beings were never well equipped to think.
This is the final challenge to the comprehensibility illusion. The illusion tells us that because the world has become broadly intelligible to human minds, it is probably intelligible in approximately human terms. But the future of intelligence may show the opposite. The world may be far more deeply legible than human cognition can presently appreciate, and the arrival of larger minds may expose our most prized understandings as only the beginning of what there is to see.
8. Conclusion: Scientific Humility in an Expanding Cognitive Universe
Human beings have every reason to take pride in what they have discovered. A species that once feared eclipses and told myths about the stars has learned to describe stellar fusion, map the genome, detect gravitational waves, manipulate atoms, and build instruments that peer across billions of light years. We have uncovered genuine structure in the universe, and we have done so with a biological organ that evolved under the local pressures of survival, sociality, and reproduction. That is one of the great facts about life on Earth. The argument of this essay is not meant to diminish that achievement. It is meant to place it in a larger and more unsettling frame.
The central danger is not ignorance alone, but the false sense of nearness to completion that success can produce. Because so much of reality has become intelligible to us, it is easy to feel that reality is, in some broad sense, proportionate to the human mind. That is the comprehensibility illusion. Because our theories are often accurate, predictive, and technologically productive, it is easy to mistake a workable map for a finished one. That is the map-completion error. Because we have little introspective access to what minds far larger than ours might be like, we underestimate the possible scale of cognition. That is scale blindness. Because the world revealed to us by human thought feels spacious and general from the inside, we fail to appreciate how local that world may be.
The dog-horizon analogy helps make this possibility vivid. A dog lives in a world that is coherent, meaningful, and sufficient for its needs, yet it has almost no access to the conceptual layers that organize human mathematics, science, law, engineering, or software. It may see the human at the desk while remaining blind to the cognitive world in which the activity makes sense. The dog’s map is not useless or false. It is simply narrow relative to what lies beyond its horizon. Humans may occupy a similar position with respect to future superintelligence. We may possess a map of reality that is powerful and in many respects correct, yet still radically incomplete relative to what larger minds could represent.
The human-range fallacy reinforces this blindness. We observe the variation that exists within our own species and then unconsciously treat that range as though it captures most of what intelligence can be. But there is no reason to think that evolution pushed human cognition anywhere near the limits of mind-space. Evolution did not optimize for universal understanding. It optimized for workable performance under specific ecological and developmental constraints. If much greater intelligence becomes technologically possible, it may reveal that the human range is not a near-ceiling but a narrow band, impressive only because it is the one band from which we currently view the world.
This matters for how we think about the future of science and the future of intelligence. If intelligence can scale not just through speed and memory but through changes in architecture, working-memory carrying capacity, temporal continuity, abstraction depth, and self-monitoring, then future minds may not simply solve our unanswered questions. They may reconceive the questions themselves. They may discover forms of abstraction that do not fit into human thought, expose hidden regularities that our concepts blur away, and transform our sense of what it means to understand anything at all. The arrival of superintelligence may therefore be not just a technological event, but an epistemic reclassification of humanity.
What follows from this is a need for scientific humility of a new kind. Not the humility that says we know nothing, because we know a great deal. And not the humility that merely says more discoveries remain, because that is obvious. What is needed is architectural humility: the recognition that the style, depth, and format of human understanding may be profoundly shaped by the narrow carrying limits of the human mind. We should be proud of what we have learned without assuming that reality has yielded itself in forms scaled to us. We should celebrate the power of human science without mistaking it for a near-final encounter with the world.
If superintelligence emerges, one of its most important lessons may be that our greatest achievement was never arriving near the end of understanding. It was reaching the point where we could begin to see how provincial our understanding may have been.
I see intelligence as something that will keep increasing indefinitely. I think intelligence and consciousness will continue to expand forever and I feel pretty confident that in my lifetime I’ll see and intelligence that can think much more complex thoughts than I can. I think that AI will make humans like ants or even microbes in my lifetime. A matryoshka brain will be smarter than a human, and a galaxy of them will be smarter still. It will be able to pay attention to many more things at once, perform searches with many more items or search parameters. it will have much more dense continuity, much better memory and will be able to track and account for many more dependencies. Can make much better predictions, have a much fuller sense of consciousness and more conscientiousness. It will think faster, and longer with more discipline, executive function and less shortsightedness. It will be more curious about complex scientific topics. It will build better and much larger models of reality.
